Michael Zorn, Chemistry Professor at UW-Green Bay, is working on a mobile based spectrophotometer that significantly reduces the overall cost of making colorimetric analytical chemistry measurements and is ideal for analysis in the field.
Professor Zorn's initial work in this field stemmed from a general interest in analytical chemistry. He saw a need and an opportunity to help reduce the often high costs of research in academia. The project was especially appealing because it both correlated with his academic interests and had the possibility of helping other researchers, teachers and professors.
He sees potential for external research grants to further develop this technology into a low-cost alternative to expensive analytical instrumentation. As he continues with his research, there will be various opportunities for students at UW-Green Bay to work on the project and experience high impact learning experiences outside of the classroom.
