UW-Stevens Point professor helps show another side of science

UW-Stevens Point professor Justin Sipiorski has found a place for his artistic talent inside the science classroom. An associate professor of biology and curator of fishes, he aims to help encourage the next generation of artistic scientists. "It was just a natural pairing for me - biology and artwork." Sipiorski said.

A native of the Stevens Point area, Sipiorski focused on biology during his undergrad at UWSP. He created art in his free time and was active in the Student Wildlife Society. Since returning to teach at his alma mater in 2008, he has taught "Biological Illustration" and advises the Scientific Illustration Club. He has seen hundreds of his scientific illustrations published throughout his career.

"I'd always dreamed of a career integrating teaching, research, and illustration," Sipiorski said. "It's an honor to be back at UW-Stevens Point and give back to the community that gave me so much."
