UW-Superior’s Daniel Baker was recognized for excellence in research communication during the WiSys Quick Pitch on March 3.

The student “pitch” competition inspires UW System students to consider the impact of their research and effectively communicate it to the public via three-minute presentations. 

Baker, a business administration student, took first place and a $300 prize for the presentation “Income Inequality and the Effects on Pursuit of Education.”

The first place finish makes Baker eligible to advance to the virtual WiSys Quick Pitch State Final on May 26 to compete against student researchers from across the UW System.

“Congratulations to Daniel Baker for an excellent presentation,” said WiSys President Arjun Sanga. “I was impressed with Daniel’s poise and that of the other student presenters, including the presentations from some of UW-Superior’s international students. Explaining complicated research is difficult under normal conditions, but doing it in your second language is another step-up. It was a pleasure to watch all the competitors embrace the challenge and grow their presentation skills.”

This year’s campus-level WiSys Quick Pitches are taking place virtually due to continued concerns about the pandemic. The UW-Superior competitors presented during the same showcase as students at three other UW System schools—UW-La Crosse, UW Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater. Winners were selected from each campus.
