Dr. Karen Schmitt serves as the Interim Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, as of June 1, 2018. She will help lead in the areas of academic program array, diversity and inclusion planning, data and policy analysis, faculty and staff development, student affairs, developmental education, and instructional technology. She also will continue to work with faculty, staff and students toward achieving the goals of the UW System restructuring. Previously, she served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor for the University of Wisconsin Colleges, where she was a central member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, providing academic and administrative leadership to foster collaboration between faculty, students and external communities to achieve a high standard of excellence in instruction and student success. As provost, Schmitt was the Chief Academic Officer of UW Colleges, bearing further responsibilities such as overseeing the planning, development and administration of UW Colleges’ programs, activities and budget in the instructional and academic support areas. Schmitt’s personal educational achievements include a PhD in geological sciences from Columbia University; an MSc in geology from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand; and a BS in geology and geophysics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Before her position with UW Colleges, Schmitt served as the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Vice Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs at the University of Alaska Southeast and as the Dean of the Community and Technical College at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Her broad expertise in higher education also includes extensive experience in two-year access institutions and online education.
