Student simulation leads to superior care for nursing home residents

Students from UW-Eau Claire have been participating in a research simulation called "Always Experience," taking on the role of a nursing home resident for 24 hours to gain insight on a resident's typical experience. The program got more than 150 students involved over the span of three years and has yielded great results, ultimately improving the daily life of nursing home residents.

The "Always Experience" focuses students' and researchers' attention on six critical elements of the nursing home environment: being welcoming, getting residents involved, improving overall care, attentiveness to dining preferences, promptly addressing concerns, and insuring patients can participate in meaningful activities. The research has helped students become more naturally in-tune with the residents' needs, allowing for a better overall resident experience.
