2010 Ideas to Profits Conference
September 30 - October 1, 2010

This year's Ideas to Profits Conference, Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 at Chula Vista Resort, Wisconsin Dells, will include some exciting new workshop topics and two great keynote speakers: Louis Foreman and Richard Meeusen. In addition to information about commercializing new product ideas and making money from patents, the Wisconsin Innovation Service Center has scheduled workshops to help small business owners and entrepreneurs learn to apply innovative practices to promote profitability. Attendees will learn how to analyze for market potential, pursue invention ideas, protect and sell intellectual property, develop new products and services, market competitively and more.

NanoRite Innovation Center and WiSys Technology Foundation welcomed all to join academic researchers and industry representatives in exploring our region's resources and technology ideas in the emerging and rapidly growing field of Nanotechnology and Micromachining. Attendees accelerated their research and business goals by networking, sharing current research interests, and exploring future collaborations in this economically significant field, which impacts diverse sectors including healthcare, energy, and aerospace.


Medical Device Collaborative Gathering at Aurora BayCare

In our ongoing effort to facilitate collaboration among Wisconsin research institutions, a Medical Device Collaborative Gathering organized by WiSys and co-sponsored by Aurora BayCare, BioForward, Marshfield Clinic and Wisconsin Entrepreneurs' Network was held at Aurora BayCare on March 5. The event brought together researchers and representatives from the UW System, industry and sponsoring organizations to network and describe their capabilities and interests in the medical device field in order to facilitate potential collaboration.


Game Development and Distance Learning Community Workshop
October 23, 2009

UW-Whitewater

WiSys Technology Foundation and UW-Whitewater invited faculty from UW campuses and members of Wisconsin industry to come together and share current projects, discuss common issues and explore potential collaborations in the fun and exciting world of multimedia arts and game development. UW is home to several new curricula in game development, including a BS in Game Development at UW-Stout, and a Media Arts and Game Development program at UW-Whitewater. Faculty and students are creating games and preparing for careers at the same time that Wisconsin is growing a community of Game companies.


Biotechnology Vision Summit 2009

3rd Annual Resource Rendezvous

The 3rd Annual Resource Rendezvous, produced by the Wisconsin Security Research Consortium, returned on August 19 in Milwaukee to bring together researchers, grant writers, business leaders and other professionals. The event overviewed current research interests of federal agencies (DARPA, DHS, IARPA, TATRC and the FBI) and their related R&D funding opportunities. Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium 2009
July 23-24
UW-La Crosse

Research and technology development are vital to the economic growth of Wisconsin. To encourage interdisciplinary research in the state, WiSys Technology Foundation and UW-La Crosse jointly organized the Second Annual Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium to bring together the most innovative researchers from the UW comprehensive campuses and other research organizations in Wisconsin. Along with over 30 research presentations by many of Wisconsin's most prolific scientific researchers, WSTS 2009 was highlighted by public addresses from Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, UW System President Kevin Reilly, UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow, Marshfield Clinic Director of Applied Sciences Bob Carlson, and Aurora Bay Care CFO Paul Summerside. The main goals of WSTS remain bringing together the best scientific minds of the state, and showcasing technology development leading to economic growth and advancement of scholarship. WSTS also offers an excellent opportunity to network and establish productive inter-disciplinary collaborations. WSTS '09 was held on July 23-24, and over the two days covered nanotechnology, sustainable energy and biomass utilization, clinical and medical sciences, pharmaceutical development, new polymers and composites, and many other exciting areas of research.


TCIC Opening Event and Symposium

UW-River Falls

March 9, 2009 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls was the site of the Tissue and Cellular Innovation Center (TCIC) Opening Event and Symposium. This roll-out event included a symposium featuring posters and oral presentations from interested parties and collaborating partners. The keynote address for this event was given by the Wisconsin Secretary of Commerce, Dick J. Leinenkugel.


NSF Day Workshop
March 6, 2009

UW-Milwaukee

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin System hosted a National Science Foundation Day Workshop at UW-Milwaukee on Friday, March 6, 2009. Key NSF representatives presented information on NSF, the review process, cross-disciplinary programs, and international programs. There were breakout sessions with program officers from the NSF directorates (see agenda) and a session on proposal writing. The conference provided faculty and researchers with key insights into a wide range of current issues at NSF, including the state of current funding; new and current policies and procedures; and pertinent administrative issues. NCCRD Inauguration and Symposium
December 6, 2008

UW-Platteville

The inauguration of the Nanotechnology Center for Collaborative Research and Development at UW-Platteville and Symposium on Advances in Nanotechnology Research at UW System took place at the UW Platteville Student Union on Saturday, December 6th. The symposium featured presentations by both UW System faculty and industry representatives. The inauguration of the NCCRD was performed by UW System Regents President Mark Bradley. Engineered Materials Gathering
August 8, 2008

UW-River Falls

UW-River Falls, UW-Whitewater, and WiSys combined to bring together University faculty and industry representatives for a Regional Collaboration Workshop focusing on engineered materials. The workshop was an informal gathering designed to foster collaborations and partnerships. It focused on research initiatives on composites for bio-implantation, production of proteins, and cell and tissue engineering. Included in the workshop were researchers from the University of Wisconsin System Schools, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Private industry representatives also attended the gathering. The event was held at UW-River Falls on Friday, August 8, 2008. Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium
July 17-18, 2008

UW-Stout

Early-stage research and technology development are vital to the economic growth of Wisconsin. To encourage interdisciplinary research in the state, Wisys Technology Foundation, UW-Stout, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and Marshfield Clnic jointly organized a symposium to bring together the most innovative researchers from the UW comprehensive campuses and other research organizations in Wisconsin. The purpose of the symposium was to foster collaborative research and initiate partnerships by providing a forum for networking among Wisconsin scientists. Highlighted by a speech from Governor Jim Doyle in which he announced his new scientific advisor, James Dahlberg, the event featured short presentations by leading researchers in areas such as life and material sciences. Additionally, representatives from several companies as well as a number of state goverment officials attended the event. The sympsium was held at UW-Stout's Memorial Student Center, July 17-18, 2008.


Medical Device Gathering
June 5, 2008

Marshfield Clinic

As part of our ongoing effort to connect research and industry, a Medical Device Collaborative Gathering was held at Marshfield Clinic on June 5. The event, organized by Marshfield Clinic, Wisconsin Entrepreneurs' Network and WiSys Technology Foundation and co-sponsored by the UW System Office of Federal Relations and Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek, S.C., brought together researchers from the UW System and Marshfield Clinic, in addition to industry representatives from throughout the state. The gathering provided the opportunity for collaborative conversation and for industry partners to describe their capabilities and interests. A consultant explained the FDA's process of approving devices, including, timelines, pitfalls and expenses. Bioenergy Gathering
January 15, 2008

UW-Stevens Point

WiSys and UW-Stevens Point organized a gathering of UW System faculty and industry researchers to introduce the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC). The event, co-sponsored by the UW System Office of Federal Relations and Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., was held at UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday, January 15. The gathering was an occasion for our faculty and the public to get to know more about the GLBRC initiative, network with researchers from System campuses and industry, and discuss possible collaborations. GLBRC members spoke about the goals, resources and potential of the GLBRC, and UW-System campus representatives spoke about their current bioenergy-related projects. Nanotechnology Gathering
January 8, 2008

UW-Platteville

WiSys, UW-Platteville, UW System Office of Federal Relations and Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., sponsored a Nanotechnology Collaborative Gathering on Tuesday, January 8 at UW-Platteville. This event was an opportunity for UW System faculty and industry experts to discuss ongoing nanotechnology programs, as well as identify opportunities for collaborative research. An additional focus was how to effectively develop a link between Wisconsin's best and brightest nanotechnology students and their future employers, who are seeking a highly skilled workforce with the skills relevant to 21st century. A number of experts from these organizations provided brief presentations on their research, including opportunities for collaboration in synthesis of shaped nanoparticles, nanowires, patterned nanowires and films for applications in sensing, metallurgy, composite materials, and electronic devices. Clinical Science Gathering

This event, organized by WiSys and sponsored by Gundersen Lutheran, UW-La Crosse, UW System Office of Federal Relations and Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., was an opportunity for UW System faculty and industry experts to discuss ongoing clinical science research programs, as well as identify opportunities for collaborative research between or among UW System campuses, Gundersen Lutheran, Marshfield Clinic, and industry. A number of experts from these organizations provided brief presentations on their research, including opportunities for collaboration in medical microbiology, medical devices, therapeutic development, biomarker identification, personalized medicine, and bioinformatics. Materials Sciences Gathering
January 27, 2007

UW-Eau Claire

This forum, held on Saturday, January 27, 2007 at UW-Eau Claire, was a continuation of efforts by WiSys and the UW System Office of Federal Relations to foster inter-campus and industry collaboration to advance technology development and federal academic research and development opportunities within the UW System. A major focus of the symposium was to identify industry partners for sponsored or contract research. The UW Eau Claire Materials Science Center has cutting edge instrumentation such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive X-ray Microanalysis, 200 keV Transmission Electron Microscope, X-ray Diffractometer, Micro-FTIR and High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer. These facilities are available for collaborators or contract research programs. An agenda, participant list and event presentatations are included below.
